Low desire, difficulty getting or maintaining an erection

Erectile difficulties are far more common than most people realize. Whether you struggle to get an erection, maintain one during sexual activity, or notice that anxiety seems to interfere with your arousal, these experiences can quickly become a source of frustration, shame, self-doubt, and relationship stress. I offer therapy in Calgary and online across Alberta for men experiencing erectile dysfunction, sexual performance anxiety, and other arousal-related concerns.

If your body isn’t responding the way you want it to, it can feel confusing, frustrating, or even discouraging. For many people, this quickly becomes something you start thinking about before, during, and after sex:

“What if it doesn’t work?”

“Why is this happening?”

“Is something wrong with me?”

For how discouraging it might sound, arousal is not something you can force.
It’s something that happens when the conditions are right.

Often, these difficulties don’t show up directly; they show up as avoidance of intimacy, changes in erections, or difficulty with lubrication.

Here are some common questions we answer in therapy:

Is erectile dysfunction always caused by anxiety or psychological factors?

No. Erectile difficulties can have medical, psychological, relational, and lifestyle contributors. In therapy we explore what strategies you have taken to exclude any medical or biological reason, which will provide us with more clarity on the psychological component. Therapy can help identify and address the psychological and relational factors that may be involved. The patterns that keep the challenges alive, and implement strategies to create favorable conditions for arousal to be there.

Can therapy help with erectile dysfunction?

Yes, psychotherapy can be extremely helpful when the root cause of ED is anxiety, stress, shame, trauma, relationship conflict, sexual conditioning, or avoidance. Substantially, with everything that is not due to a biological cause. Discovering the patterns that cause your body to react in a way that brings discomfort, and actively working to change them can bring long term benefits for erectile dysfunction.

Yes, frequently people can experience significant differences between alone experiences and experiences with partners. If people have different partners, it is also not uncommon to experience ED only with a particular person, or vice-versa, only to have erections with a particular person.

This can be related to the different concepts, beliefs, and expectation that every situation carries. Different settings have different triggers for anxiety, pressure, relational dynamics, and learned patterns of arousal.

In therapy, we explore the meaning of those, and we work on techniques that will help you understand what is happening in your body and in your mind, when it happens and before it happens, so that we can work on changing the pattern.

I get an erection during masturbation but not with a partner. Is that common?

Do you offer therapy for Erectile Dysfunction?

Yes, I provide therapy in-person in Calgary, and online across Alberta.

In therapy, we don’t try to “fix” your body.

We work on changing the conditions that make arousal more or less likely to happen.

This might include:

  • reducing performance pressure

  • shifting attention away from monitoring

  • understanding and reshaping habits

  • reconnecting with physical sensations in a different way

  • exploring the emotional and relational context around sexuality

Many people experience this at some point in their lives.

It doesn’t mean something is fundamentally wrong with you... it means something in the current pattern isn’t working.

And patterns can change.

If this is something you’ve been dealing with, you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

We can use a free 15-minute consultation to talk through what’s been happening and see if working together feels like a good fit.
